Filming Surgery From Fixed Height with 8.25mm and 25.00mm Lens in GoPro® Camera

Posted on

In this post we show the use of two after-market lenses that we sell for the GoPro® HERO® cameras that allow a user to see a much narrower (zoomed in) field of view compared to the stock lens. Many of our customers use both lenses for filming subject matter such as surgery and teeth cleaning (dentistry). For a guide on how these lenses compare in depth of field, please the guide HERE.

What you should get out of this post:

Though the 25mm lens (PeauPro14) has a narrower FOV we recommend mainly using the 8.25mm lens (PeauPro47) due to its larger depth of focus (and sharper optics). The 25mm lens is only recommended when you're positioning the camera, setting the focus (manually by turning the lens) and then leaving it in that position (due to its shallower depth of focus field). If you do use the 25mm you will likely need to re-focus the lens each time the camera or your subject changes in distance from one another. The closer the subject the shallower the depth of field when using any lens.

Cameras Used:

PeauPro41: 8.25mm f/3.0 41d HFOV 16MP (No Distortion)

PeauPro14: 25.00mm f/2.0 14d HFOV 5MP

*Note that the camera's color profile was removed using our exclusive service HERE, so you don't get a red vignette around the captured media

The stock GoPro® lens has about a 120 degree horizontal field of view (HFOV) in the Wide FOV settings. Medium mode is about 75 degrees and Narrow is 60 degrees.

We used a PeauPro41 which contains our 8.25mm lens. The 8.25mm lens has about a 41 degree horizontal field of view (HFOV) in the Wide FOV settings. Medium mode is about 30 degrees and Narrow is 20 degrees.

We also used a PeauPro14 which contains our 25mm lens. The 25mm lens has about a 14 degree horizontal field of view (HFOV) in the Wide FOV settings. Medium mode is about 10 degrees and Narrow is 7 degrees.

In the images below, the GoPro® HERO® 4 Black was in 1080p video mode. We then used the free video software VLC to capture a still image of resolution 1920x1080 from the video frame. During the changing of video modes from Wide to Medium to Narrow the subject (hand) was not moved. When changing between the various distances, the subject was positioned as close as possible to the other positions. The position that the cameras with the different lenses were in was not the same, as the same camera was used and the lens swapped. Use the tape measure (ruler) to judge real-world measurements. We also recommend using our lens calculator linked just below to further estimate the real-world measurements.
